This post will give you a step-by-step guide to resolving an error received when trying to install Management Reporter 2012 in Dynamics GP. Before reading, have you considered your options for Dynamics GP End of Life? It is crucial for businesses to start planning their transition now. Learn more about your options here.
Users working on upgrading Dynamics GP from GP 2010 to GP 2016 who have successfully installed Dynamics GP 2016 R2 and SQL Server 2016 have been getting the following error message when trying to install Management Reporter 2012 with Cumulative Update 15:
“Couldn’t retrieve the list of available databases: the connection attempt failed.”
What causes this error
After coming across this error message during a Dynamics GP 2016 upgrade, it seemed to only happen if Dynamics GP 2016 is already installed on the server. The error comes about due to Dexterity Shared Components. When Dynamics GP 2016 is installed, the program installs Dexterity Shared Components Version 16. However, Management Reporter 2012 works with a lower version of Dexterity Shared Components. If Dynamics GP 2016 is already installed, Management Reporter does not install the required Dexterity Shared Components version due to the presence of the version installed by Dynamics GP 2016.
How to solve this error when installing Management Reporter
Close the Management Reporter Configuration Console and manually install the Dynamics GP 2013 Dexterity Shared Components version 12.
Go to: MDGP2013_R2_DVD_ENUS\MDGP2013_R2_ENUS\Tools\Dex
After the correct version of Dexterity Shared Components is installed, users will be able to proceed with management reporter configuration with no error.
