THE WHY, WHAT, AND HOW OF LIFE AT CITRIN COOPERMAN

ROBERT GILBERT
AUDIT MANAGER, NEW JERSEY

"One of the cliché things I say about Citrin all of the time is that we have “big firm resources with a small firm atmosphere.”

Q: Why did you choose Citrin Cooperman?
A: I actually came in through a merger. I think one of the reasons the firm chose to merge was that Joel gave the sense that there is no limit to success. For someone with determination and an entrepreneurial spirit, the sky is the limit.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the firm culture?
A: No matter how big we get, we’ll still have a small firm atmosphere since most of our partners came from small firms merging in. Even though we all have a lot to do and we certainly keep busy, we always seem to find a few hours here and there to chat, have a drink, have lunch, etc. It’s hard to balance growth and culture but this firm pulls it off.

Q: How does Citrin Cooperman help you focus on what counts?
A: When I was new to the firm I would overhear the partners talking to clients on the phone. I was surprised to hear that 90% of the conversations were non-accounting related. I would hear conversations about kids, sports, vacations, business struggles, business successes, and everything in between. Very rarely was there a conversation that just had to do with someone’s tax return or financial statement. That taught me to focus on the
relationship aspect of being a professional advisor.

RENATA HOWARD
PARTNER, CONNECTICUT

Q: Why did you choose Citrin Cooperman?
A: I became part of the Citrin Cooperman family through a merger. I know that my predecessor firm felt that Citrin Cooperman embodied similar values as they did: in making sure that all clients, small or large, are given the same amount of attention, in providing quality service and in appreciating their employees. This held true and has not changed over the five years that I have been part of the Citrin Cooperman family.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the firm culture?
A: I enjoy the transparency within the firm and feeling that everyone is part of a team.

Q: How does Citrin Cooperman help you focus on what counts?
A: Citrin Cooperman helps me focus on what counts by encouraging personal growth, which not only makes a path for my own accomplishments, but more importantly, contributes to the success of our clients.

HEATHER OBODA
TAX MANAGER, WHITE PLAINS

Q: Why did you choose Citrin Cooperman?
A: My firm merged in June 2011 but I chose to come in with my group not only because I liked the group I worked for but looked forward to new opportunities and access to more tools and specialties.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the firm culture?
A: The family environment we have here; we spend so much time together it is nice that we all get along so well and I know I have a group of people here that will support me.

Q: How does Citrin Cooperman help you focus on what counts?
A: By allowing me to specialize Citrin Cooperman is helping me better service our clients, and be an expert in T&E since focusing on giving the best service to clients is what counts.

SHRENIK SHAH
PARTNER, INDIA

Q: Why did you choose Citrin Cooperman?
A: Came through a merger, and I am happy to be here.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the firm culture?
A: The firm takes keen interest in career/professional development and meeting needs of the employees, like CPEs, CCUs, mentoring, incentives for passing CPA exams, staff surveys by CEO, and changing firm policies to accommodate staff needs, etc.

Q: How does Citrin Cooperman help you focus on what counts?
A: I work hard and I not only get paid for my hard work, but I also get appreciation of my hard work, which is quite satisfying...The words of appreciation/recognition of hard work works as a morale booster for me! Also the firm gives you a platform to explore the latent talent in you, i.e. through participating in various initiatives, various sports events, public speaking, etc.

Any other comments you would like to give:
A: To me Citrin Cooperman means...strong leadership, constant growth, exploring opportunities, and striving hard for the best results!

GLENYS MEREJO
DIRECTOR, NEW JERSEY

Q: Why did you choose Citrin Cooperman?
A: When I transitioned to Citrin Cooperman, I choose Citrin because of the firm’s good reputation in the industry and my desire for growth.
The firm I was working for at the time (2006) was small (about 15 people including admin) and Citrin was about 145. Scary at first, but since my first day I felt welcomed with the support of all the members of my department.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the firm culture?
A: I chose my career because I simply like making a difference, because I enjoy helping the clients and finding the perfect solution to their problems or concerns and providing expert advice when needed. I found all of that in Citrin Cooperman’s culture.
Being a CPA at Citrin Cooperman never gets boring, this career will always keep me humble because there will never be a time when I feel as if I can know it all, but I know that I can count on the expertise of all the other professionals within the firm that are just a phone call away. Again, it’s the enjoyment and fascination because every day you can work with a different client, solve a different problem, learn a new thing, and collaborate with different team members depending on the project you’re working on. There is not one of us who can work alone all day, every day. We all at Citrin, even if working from different offices, come together to achieve a common goal, which is the satisfaction of the clients and the growth of the firm.

Q: How does Citrin Cooperman help you focus on what counts?
A: Citrin Cooperman provides a lot of opportunity for staff participation in committees and activities at all levels of the firm. (i.e. the CC Cares committee activities). As a member of the CC Cares committee I understand how important is to the firm and the top administration to give back to the community and to share the experience of giving back with all members of the firm.
Citrin Cooperman has developed various new policies to support and encourage women’s growth within the firm, work-life balance, among others, for the benefit of the employees.

MICHAEL ZYBOROWICZ
AUDIT DIRECTOR, PHILADELPHIA

Q: Why did you choose Citrin Cooperman?
A: I interned at Citrin Cooperman during the summer after my junior year in college. At the end of the internship, Joel took me out to lunch and offered me a full-time position. He asked that I think about it, but I knew right then and there that this was where I wanted to work. We were much smaller in 2002 but the connection that the staff had was invigorating. I really enjoyed coming to work and interacting with the group, and the feeling was that the partners would always go out of their way to make sure that the group stays together.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the firm culture?
A: To me, firm culture starts with the people that you work with. We try to hire people that will get along with others in the office and work toward common goals. Working with people that share your passion makes the toughest of situations easier to deal with. The culture at Citrin Cooperman has been the main reason that this is the only place where I have worked since graduating college.

Q: How does Citrin Cooperman help you focus on what counts?
A: At Citrin Cooperman, we strive to be well-rounded professionals and are often asked to wear many hats. Not only are we CPAs that are expected to provide technical services such as completion of audits or preparation of tax returns, but we are also business advisors that need to consult our clients on more of a business level. At Citrin Cooperman, we have year round training on many of these areas and mentors that serve as strong examples.

MARC SONNENBERG
AUDIT PARTNER, LONG ISLAND

Q: Why did you choose Citrin Cooperman?
A: When I first met with Citrin Cooperman, I was immediately taken back with the overall positive morale of the employees. I quickly came to learn that Citrin Cooperman is not only a well-managed business, but that the firm’s management truly cares about the feelings and needs of their staff.

Q: What do you enjoy most about the firm culture?
A: The staff and the partners share the same values that are important to me. Everyone works hard at serving their clients, ensuring that their career path is moving towards their goals while balancing their family and personal needs. Ultimately, you end up spending a significant portion of your daily week with these people. I feel extremely fortunate that I am surrounded by such an amazing group of professionals who I can call friends.

Q: How does Citrin Cooperman help you focus on what counts?
A: For my professional growth, Citrin Cooperman has provided me with the tools needed to continually advance my career. I find that I am consistently challenged on a daily basis, and I know that I have a team of 700+ professionals behind me willing to assist me with whatever I need.
